UK likely to cut contributions to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance – Bond reaction
Following news that the UK might cut its contributions to Gavi, a group providing lifesaving vaccines globally, Romilly Greenhill, CEO of Bond, the UK network for NGOs, said:
Following the US government’s funding pause and Stop Work Order on its international assistance, it is alarming that the UK is likely to cut its contribution to Gavi.
The UK has historically been a major contributor to Gavi, which has vaccinated more than 1.1 billion children globally since it was established, helping to prevent nearly 18 million deaths. With funding for global goods such as Gavi in crisis, it’s crucial that the UK takes action to avoid backsliding on global health gains.
We urge the UK government to use the upcoming multi-year spending review to ensure that adequate resources are available to meet such global needs and not delay important decisions on replenishments that need to happen now. Now is not the time for the UK to step back, but an opportunity to take real action to demonstrate it is serious about making a positive impact through global collaboration and rebuild its reputation as a trusted development partner.
ENDS.
