Bond response to David Lammy becoming the new Foreign Secretary

In reaction to David Lammy’s appointment as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Romilly Greenhill, CEO of Bond, the UK network for NGOs, said:

Congratulations to David Lammy on his appointment as Foreign Secretary. We look forward to working with him to address urgent global crises and restore the UK’s international reputation as a reliable and trusted global partner.

This is a critical time for Britain to use its influence to promote peace and security across the world, particularly by helping to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as responding to the devastating conflict in Sudan and continuing to support Ukraine to protect its citizens.

We hope the UK will play a progressive and ambitious role under the Foreign Secretary’s leadership, working with global partners to reshape development and humanitarian assistance so it helps build a more equitable and sustainable future. A key priority needs to be addressing the global debt crisis and taking steps to ensure the global financial system is fairer and more equitable.

We also urge the Foreign Secretary to work across government to secure a much-needed return to 0.7% and a UK aid budget that is effective, transparent, and accountable.

We look forward to working with him to shift power to communities in lower and middle-income countries and redefine the UK’s international role based on partnership, solidarity and respect.

ENDS.
